"The whole of New Zealand Society is caught in a low-tone reinforcement feedback! The Welfare State promotes cronic low tones" [ Z.A.P Lecture Notes 1:2.5]
Broadly speaking John Dalhoff’s programme, or courses, involved nine steps known as Sequence Principals.
The completion of the all nine would cost the student around $50,000 (figure taken from NZ Times,
The programme bears many of the hallmarks of Scientology’s ‘ Axioms’ (axioms are described as concise statements of basic truths about the nature of the human spirit) and it was contextually necessary to include them as a reference point - weighing this all up, against Scientology’s reputation for litigious action and ‘the cost of a good lawyer’.
In 1992 Z.A.P appeared on Scientology’s ‘black-list’ (what they called Subversive Groups) so I’m hoping they’ll view the reproduction of their material compassionately.
Some how I doubt, Zenith Applied Philosphists (sic) will view my summation and analogies in such a charitable light.
One Z.A.P ‘drop-out’ stated “the aims of the courses or therapy seems to be to ‘clear the mind’ on decisions about the future”. Then went on to say “this is nothing new – Scientology has claimed to do it in Dianetics”."What Z.A.P does in ‘clearing the mind’ seems to be to rid the will of consciousness in making decisions”. So even early on, the connection between both was formed.
It is seemingly impossible to get away, from the correlation (content wise) between Z.A.P and Scientology – as I've just indicated some Z.A.P students picked-up on this homogeneity, at a time well prior to the invention of the internet, and readily available information being at ones finger-tip. You may remember I highlighted Kevin McGuire’s consumer complaint, in relation to this, made to the Christchurch Star, November,1977.
In one of Z.A.P’s own course outlines, a student endorsement (full text below) refers to the ‘Mest Dynamic’. Mest is an acronym coined by L.Ron Hubbard and stands for ‘matter, energy, space and time’. The same student, who rather coincidentally uses the initials RH, goes on to mention “The theta is incredible”. The term theta bears a striking resemblance to ‘thetan’ – Scientology’s concept of a soul or spirit.
Amongst the other Z.A.P, student references in the above publicity, there is talk of ‘cognations’ or ‘cog’ for short. The Official Scientology and Dianetics Glossary define ‘cognations’ as a new realisation of life. Cognitions result in higher degrees of awareness and consequently greater abilities to succeed with one’s endeavors in life. ‘Cog’ is given as the abbreviation of cognation.
‘Reactive Mind’ is another similitude shared between Z.A.P and Scientology. "Dianetics gets rid of the reactive mind. It's the only thing that does" (Scientolgy’s web site)
In order for you to aquiant yourself with the ‘tones’ when you run into them later in Part 2, The Scientology Handbook defines ‘The Tone Scale’ as ‘a vital tool for any aspect of life involving one’s fellows—is a scale which shows the successive emotional tones a person can experience. By “tone” is meant the momentary or continuing emotional state of a person. Emotions such as fear, anger, grief, enthusiasm and others which people experience are shown on this graduated scale’
Z.A.P’s founding ‘Sequence Principals’ bear an uncanny resemblence to Scientology’s ‘Overt Motivator Sequence’.
Scientology is founded on ‘Eight Dynamics’ – Z.A.P has/had ‘Eleven Dynamics’.
Z.A.P’s first dynamic: Self Scientology first dynamic: Self
Z.A.P’s 3rd & 4th Dynamic: Group Scientology 3rd dynamic: Groups
Z.A.P’s 5th Dynamic: Life Forms Scientology 5th Dynamic: Life Forms
Z.A.P’s 6th Dynamic: Physical World Scientology 6th: Physical Universe
Z.A.P’s 7th Dynamic: Spiritual Scientology 7th: Spiritual
TR’s (short for ‘training regimes’) was another paralell term used by Z.A.P, such as the ‘bull-baiting’ exercise you will soon learn more about below. A web site listing some of Scientology’s ‘secrets’ had this rather derogatory desciption on Scientology’s version of these training regimes; ‘TR’s are a series of mind-numbing exercises’.
Bullbaiting itself is an exercise invented by Scientolgy, given this rather laconic ‘mental picture’ on the forementioned ‘Secrets of Scientology’ site : 'sit with eyes open for hours, not moving laughing or twitching, confronting coach while s/he tries in every way to make you react'.
The most publically know off all Scientology terms is probably ‘operating thetan’ or O.T for short. Amongst the Z.A.P courses, there just happens to be one called ‘O.T Junior’ or if one was at a higher step, they could attend a sales course with the epithet ‘O.T.P.U’.
Other ‘shared’ terminologies and concepts, be it with subtle changes, between The Church of Scientology & Zenith Applied Philosophy include:
ARC (short for affinity, reality and communication)
‘ARC is the basic answer to every question’ [
Corrective Technology (part of auditing)
Cycle of Action (sequence of actions)
Demo Kits (self explanatory)
Fast Flow (learning method)
Feedback Loop (negative and positive)
Mis-Emotion (an unpleasant emotion)
‘Mis-emotion – where the emotions are out of control and you are at the mercy of your own glands’ [
Nomenclature (synonym for survival)
Overt (per above)
Present Time (PT for short)
Stable Datum (a stable of knowledge)
‘Stable Datum Principle – a datum which the individual believes is true and relies upon to handle trouble – a premise which forms part of the individual world view’ [
An outsider’s view of the ‘initial’ course came from John Kelly, another one-time sales-man for Gerald Henrys, Hot Press Print Ltd, in the Christchurch Star (
To paraphrase Kelly’s account:
“Joy Dalhoff began by defining success as having all we desired at any time we desired it. She went on to give us handy hints for attaining this success along ‘power of positive thinking’ lines”.
“Relationships, she said should be broken down into their elements in order that we might better control them”.
“We were told that people have a characteristic tone, that Z.A.P had produced a scale of those tones ranging from the depths of apathy through to anger, hostility and enthusiasm to the heights of the ultimate”.
“We were told we should all strive to be up-tone. Low-tone people are victims of life. High-tone people are winners – life being a rat race and a competitive affair”.
“One senior student went as far as stating he would kick a drunk rather than help him out of it”.
“We were told that life is a game, that winners count and losers are a burden”.
This account was similar to that of Kevin McGuire’s, except McGuire described attending a ‘Communications Course’.
Verbatim, here’s McGuire’s account (paraphrased again):
He said the one he was on had about 30 students. He estimated about 75 per cent of them were doing it – at least for the second time- and said all had paid to do it.
“Students are paired off and sit facing each other. You are not allowed to talk about the course with anyone else – only the student you are paired off with”.
“One of the exercises is called bull-baiting”.
“In this one student faces the other and stare at each other. The one who is the subject is not allowed to twitch, swallow, yawn or stifle a yawn. For beginners this exercise may go on for 10 minutes. Advanced students are supposed to do this for two and a half hours” Mr McGuire said.
Another exercise was called getting a ‘terminating acknowledgement’. In this, one person demands to know the answer to a question and the other must try and avoid answering it.
“A typical question is: Do birds fly? And the questioner must persist in an effort to get an answer. You might try to say something like: ‘Look I’m not going to answer a silly question like that’. But the questioner must persist, shouting if need be”.
In Z.A.P’s own publicity blurb, attendee’s endorsement quotes, without exception, waxed lyrically about the benefits of the courses.
Here are four of the twenty-one positive endorsements for you to mull-over, before continuing these comparisons in part 2.
“It is terrific to have the opportunity to be here and to be able to do this incredible course. I must say that I do appreciate even more, you and the data. Before (12 months ago) my purpose was not as strong as it is now, but I know I have the ruins in hand, my main one being lack of action on what I know. I still have cycles amiss in the Mest Dynamic which could hinder the very close future of me doing courses, but I still plan to put in all effort into evading that hindrance and to continue upgrading book sales and working also on stability in the home environment. I want to maintain what I have for good, not just for now. Work, work, work is necessary. Thanks John for a tremendous course. Theta is incredible. What you have achieved is just incredible. Thanks”. RH.
“Over the course nights just experienced, I have definitely gained more in depth understanding of getting the basic of these initial course techniques in enough to start the fantastic journey into handling the reactive mind. The effects of each individual confronting and at least understanding to put basic data into application is what will hold this planet together. I can express gratitude by my commitment to more application because I now know that this is the only true ethical way. Thanks for this knowledge John. PF.
“This zone has made me very aware of my body and what it takes to make it run smoothly. Like any good machine it needs the right fuel and maintenance to keep it running well. It was a real experience getting the communication in with the body and for the first time becoming really aware of the body’s needs and assertions” SD.
“Today I found myself looking at other people and thinking, “they are not even aware of what they are missing, and what is missing in them. Looking forward to A.C and T.R’s” NU.
